About ERNST SÖDERBERG (1887 – 1967)

Born in Hamburg, he studied painting there at the Kunstgewerbeschule from 1908 to 1909. Subsequently he assisted Wilhelm Köppen (1876—1917) on various monumental works from 1912 to 1914. He moved to Sweden in 1916 to study with Carl Wilhelmson in Stockholm and to Valands Art School in Gothenburg and the Art Academy in Stockholm a year later. Whilst at the Academy he was awarded the Chancellor's Medal in 1923 and the Royal Medal in 1924. In 1925 he was awarded the Kinmanson Foundation Scholarship in 1925 and the Beskowska Scholarship in 1926, as well as a travel scholarship from 1927 to 1930, which he used for study trips to Italy, France and Spain.

He travelled across Europe on painting trips whilst exhibiting commercially across Sweden throughout the 1930s. He worked professionally in all mediums, carved and sculpted, ultimately specialising ecclesiastical commissions that included stained glass windows, altar ornaments, pulpits and altarpieces. He is represented in the Swedish Museum of Modern Art, Värmland Museum, Eskilstuna Art Museum, Borås Art Museum and Västerås Art Gallery.
