"For the last two or three years I haven’t been travelling around Scotland quite as much as I have done in previous years. Consequently, this collection of work is confined mainly to locations I am very familiar with and have painted many times–such as the coastline around Arisaig with views to the Small Isles of Eigg and Rum. While these paintings are perhaps quieter and less dramatic, they are also simpler and more intimate in terms of painterly relationships. This is certainly the case in the local paintings around my home in the Scottish Borders where I have lived since 1991. It always takes me by surprise to still discover such familiar subjects seen with a new or slightly different perspective. Similarly, I have been camping in Glen Nevis for 40 years but unexpectedly discovered these trees! Away from my more accustomed west coast light I also visited Northumbria for a few days. It was late November and perhaps not the best time of year for light and atmosphere. Surprisingly late afternoon at Beadnell Bay proved particularly rewarding. I had not expected such light effects on the east coast. But I must admit it was very windy and extremely cold!" - Charles Simpson
