About Phil May (1864-1903)

Described as the ‘Grandfather of British illustration’ his economy of line was said to have modernised his trade and certainly influenced the next generation of cartoonists from Frank Reynolds to David Low. My monk is a perfect example of his simple draughtsmanship and pared down humour.

This is a jolly little chap that stirs a lot of memories for me. Punch magazine was still a part of life when I was growing up. The annual would get passed around elderly relatives at Christmas and old book shelves in back bedrooms would be mouldering with bound volumes of unread copies. The artists who filled those pages were household names in their day and none more so than Phil May. Described as the ‘Grandfather of British illustration’ (thank you Chris Beetles) his economy of line was said to have modernised his trade and certainly influenced the next generation of cartoonists from Frank Reynolds to David Low. My monk is a perfect example of his simple draughtsmanship and pared down humour. No more words needed, ‘Corked’ speaks volumes of the poor man’s disappointment. Purchased from the lovely Kay Michie in 1994, I’ll miss it if it goes.
